Disease-Resistant Crops

Alternatives to Chemicals

Growers have always battled plant diseases — and always will. In the past century, the agriculture industry turned to farm chemicals to control diseases, and the world's food supply grew. As we begin a new century, we know that we need to take a more integrated, sustainable approach to produce more food. Seminis is dedicated to finding alternatives to chemical controls.

Recently, we introduced spinach varieties resistant to ten races of downy mildew (Peronspora farinosa) — a destructive, quickly mutating fungus that is difficult to control. We have also developed tomatoes resistant to tomato yellow leaf curl virus (Geminivirus), a highly destructive pathogen that affects production worldwide. We are the first to trial sweet bell peppers with resistance to five races of bacterial spot, a yield-limiting disease prevalent in major production areas, and much more.

Hybrids Boost Yields

Vigorous plants outperform old varieties

In Brazil, a new Seminis carrot hybrid named Juliana has produced 25% higher yields than current seed products. New hybrid onions in India, hybrid leeks in Europe and hybrid peppers in North America have had similar success, many times requiring less water, fertilizers, pesticides and labor. These breakthroughs are being repeated throughout the globe as vegetable growers convert to new Seminis hybrids.

Bambino®
Small size, big taste. And no waste. Bambino is a mini personal watermelon that's sweeter and more portable than its larger cousins, offering the perfect fruit for small families. It's about the size of a large cantaloupe, and it's seedless, too. Available now in North America and Australia. Learn more at www.bambinomelons.com.

Lettuce Jammers™
It's a wrap. Lettuce Jammers are a whole new type of lettuce developed specifically for wraps, and not for salads. The sturdy leaves holds their shape with hot foods, and will not wilt in your lunchbox. Learn more at www.lettucejammers.com.

Rainbow Carrots
Originally created by nature, but rediscovered by Seminis. We are reviving some long-forgotten carrot colors, not just for their novelty, but for the health benefits. These roots are super sweet, crunchy, and rich in antioxidants. Available now in North America and Australia.

Innovative Sweet Peppers
Sweet! Our sweet peppers have better flavor and come in exciting sizes, shapes and colors. They are virtually seedless.

Ultra-Sweet Cantaloupe for Every Season
The best of both worlds. New hybrids from Seminis combine the unrivaled sweetness of a French Charentais melon with the crispy texture and storing benefits of the well-known American cantaloupe. In the past, the problem with very sweet melons was spoilage. Their high sugar content caused the fruit to turn to mush in just a few days. This innovative melon solves that problem.

Scarlet™ Sweet Corn
Color it nutritious. A new sweet corn developed by Seminis adds flair (and antioxidants) to summertime feasts. The eye-catching kernels are just as sweet and tender as yellow and white corn, with an added bonus. The pigment in this corn is a naturally occurring antioxidant known as anthocyanin.

Multi-Color Grape Tomatoes
Variety and flavor. Yellow, orange, red and colors in-between reflect the natural diversity of tomatoes. Seminis is incorporating this rainbow of color into super sweet, bite-sized tomatoes — one of the most popular new types.

Orange Cauliflower
Packed with beta-carotene. Seminis has developed commercial-quality hybrids of orange cauliflower, originally discovered by Cornell University plant breeders. While it tastes the same as regular white cauliflower, this cultivar contains up to 25 times more beta-carotene, according to university reports.
